Bit of a stony day

Matt got star find of the day today early on with this very nice double ended hammerstone, here in close up:

One end shows up quite clearly in this pic, what you can't see is that it also showed signs of being used as a rubbing stone on one side:

Matt and Harry have been working in an area below the main entrance passageway where there's a couple of sections of walling at right angles with a very rubbly infill, producing a fair few finds mainly animal bone:

From the same area came this large worked stone, with pecked indentations, possibly a pivot stone, or if you have a slightly more Neolithic mindset and the eye of faith, possibly even a couple of cup marks?

Finally another highlight of the day was the arrival of our very own Rose, taking a break from her PhD, who made it to site just before lunch having started out at some ungodly hour at London Heathrow. Mind you she did have a more than OK flight up to Edinburgh, since for some reason when she bought her ticket business class tickets were on offer cheaper than economy, so she got the business class lounge complete with full breakfast (several courses, fruit, croissants, sausages, eggs etc etc) and a glass of bubbly, then shortly after yet another breakfast of smoked salmon, croissants and yoghurt on the flight and she took a picture to prove it:

I think she felt a bit aggrieved when the Edinburgh to Kirkwall leg only came with coffee and biscuits!
