Volunteer at the Knowe of Swandro

We hope to open applications for volunteers by the end of February 2020, and all the information and 2020 application form will be available on this page for download. Please do not contact us regarding volunteering in 2020 until we officially open for applications - we do not keep a list of prospective future volunteers.

General Information

Volunteers must be able to stay for at least two weeks. Please be aware that accommodation is extremely limited in Rousay and it is very likely that prospective volunteers will need to stay in Mainland Orkney and commute over daily on the ferry. You will need to arrange and pay for your own accommodation and travelling expenses, although we can collect you from the pier and take you to the road above the site.

Prospective excavators need to be aware that due to the location of the site, the uneven terrain, and unstable nature of the storm beach you will need to be both fit and well to dig with us and, whilst it is free to dig at Swandro we can't pay any of your expenses, but we do occasionally get treats sent over on the boat by kind benefactors so there may be doughnuts! We are fundraising to pay for the excavation - please consider making a donation - thank you for your support.
