If you would like to join the dig team in 2017, volunteers are very welcome. Experience is preferred but not essential but prospective volunteers need to be aware that due to the nature of the site, the uneven terrain, and unstable nature of the storm beach you will need to be both fit and well to join to dig at Swandro. Orkney weather can also be wet and windy even in summer so you will also need a full set of waterproofs, stout footwear (preferably steel toed boots) woolly hat, gloves & lots of warm clothing. A sense of humour and ability to work as part of a team is also a must!
Please also note that we unfortunately do not have any funding at the moment to provide accommodation for volunteers if you are from outside Orkney, so you will have to arrange and pay for this yourself.
Accommodation is limited in Rousay but we can recommend the Taversoe Hotel as a comfortable place to stay with good food, good views and Swannay Brewery beer on tap, just what you need after a hard day's digging!
We also do not have any funds to pay travel expenses for volunteers but we can arrange for you to be collected from the pier and taken to the dig.
We do not know how long the 2017 excavation season will be as this depends on the success of our fundraising efforts, but we hope to have at least a 4 week season in July 2017. We will not know the dig dates until nearer the time but if you’d like to dig with us please contact us for more information, or use one of our other ways to keep in touch.
We don’t make a charge for digging at Swandro but of course donations to the dig fund are always very welcome!
07/02/17 Sorry - following the recent Facebook post about volunteers we are inundated and can't handle any more enquiries for 2017!
